Meet the band..

We're Sight.. Blind Sight.. hehehe..

8 days till our 'debut'.. can you feel the earth trembling? hehe..

New found friends..

Dear fellow bloggers,

First I'd like to welcome you guys.. I also would like to take this opportunity to... wait a sec.. this sounds so skema.. woshh woshh <-- me clearing my head.. hehe.. What I really want to say is.. I'm very happy with the response I get from you guys.. It's only been a few months since I started blogging but it has become one of my favourite past time.. It's good to be able to share my thoughts and have people giving their inputs (creativeslave85 is one of those regulars).. kinda makes the world seems abit warmer and closer rather than cold and devided apart.. :)

Anyway.. since there has been concerns of people not being able to leave comments due to various reasons (from non-blogspot members to lost comments), I've decided to set up a chat box.. you can find it at the sidebar under Jom Sembang!!.. So, feel free to drop a line anytime.. ;)

OK, see you guys on the flip side!!

P/S: Cbox came to me via cosmic freak, who got it from juliana, who got it from melissa.. See how good things have their way of sreading around? :)

La Bamba!!

I was going through the radio frequency this morning and this song stopped me.. it was on Red104.9

La Bamba

Para bailar la bamba
Para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia y otra cosita
Y arriba y arriba
Y arriba y arriba y arriba ire

Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan
Soy capitan, soy capitan

Bamba, bamba, bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba

Para bailar la bamba
Para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia pa mi pa ti
Ay y arriba y arriba
Y arriba y arriba y arriba ire

Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, por ti sere
Por ti sere, por ti sere

Bamba, bamba, bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba

Artist: Los Lobos
Originally Recorded by Ritchie Valens

Automatically, I was singing along with it! After all this time, I couldn't believe that I still remembered the Spanish lyrics! hahaha..
Technically, La Bamba was actually the first song I performed 'live'. I was just in Darjah 3 when I first saw the movie and it was one of those really inspiring ones! It chanced my view towards life as that was when I got the 'idea' that someday, someone might make a movie out of my life.. so from then on I'd always tell people what I went through for the day so that someone would actually know what really happen to me if they were to be interviewed.. :) such an innocent child back then kan?.. nowdays, I've learned that some things are best kept to myself.. adults, go figure :P

Anyway, since I really loved that movie, me and 2 of my friends (Mohd. Fadzli and Ahmad Nizam - mana diorang sekarang?) decided to sing at the school's Hari Penyampaian Hadiah.. We did 2 songs from that movie.. Fadzli took 'La Bamba', and I sang 'Donna'.. as you can see, even back then I've always been the jiwang one.. hahaha.. so now.. almost 20 years later (2007 is the 20th anniversary of the movie.. God, has it really been THAT long?!) I'm driving in my car to work and as I heard the song, I could still remember not only the words, but how the video clip was like.. How Lou Diamond Phillips was at a carnival and towards the end of the song took on the stange and sang with Los Lobos.. The way he slinged on the guitar, he was soooo cool!! he was the man!! hehe

Aaahh.. Nostalgic days such as this sure makes you feel good.. maybe there'll be a time when I'll do a 'real' performance of La Bamba & Donna and live my dream.. heck, I'm already in a band :)

Today's philosophy --> Life is a movie, and you're the lead star!

The joy of being a teacher..

I don't know about other teachers out there, but personally I feel fuzzy inside whenever I see my students do well..
And what better way to 'measure' their ability level then by giving them a test!! :D

Last Saturday was my last class for the Level 3 students.. Well, actually its a combined class with 2 students from the Level 4 class - their's got axed as there we not enough students.. :P
Now, eventhough they are not originally my students (I took over the class mid-way) and they weren't actually my 1st batch of students, I still have a soft spot for them.. It's been a pleasure
seeing them week after week and to just hang out with them most of the time.. kinda reminds me when I took a Japanese language course at INTEKMA 10 years ago (Oh God! Has it really been that long?!)

I had bought this booklet especially for these guys.. It's the 2003 Japanese Language Proficiency Test paper for Level 4..
Note: JLPT is most recognized Japanese language test conducted internationally once a year and is usually the main benchmark for student who wants to go to Japan for further studies. It has 4 levels from the highest 'Level 1' to the more ground level or basic 'Level 4'. University entry requires atleast a 'Level 2', which is where yours truly stands at the moment.. :P

Unfortunately, only 3 could make it to the class.. namely Loo, Ziyen and Pui Mun.. absent from the 'playlist' were Arina, Tan and Reshera.. I won't mention who is my favourite student here la as it's improper for a sensei to pilih bulu.. hehe.. besides, they're all very special ;)
Anyway.. I was really amazed at how they performed on the test.. Scores aside, the following is my analysist of the 3 who took the test (the other 3 I'll save for another entry)..

- Loo -

Mr CooL.. he's quite the collective kind.. has a great working mind - he may not realize it but his mind can understand how things work naturally, doesn't need to memorize formulas but could come up with a 'relative theory' by his own.. kinda reminds me of me.. hehe

- ZiYen -

Shy Gal.. she's very VERY SMART! And I mean smart as in can quickly pick things up with proper guidance.. She know's alot but can be pretty reserved at times.. can't wait for her to come out of her shell.. something I figured out how to do during my 2nd year in Japan.. ;)

- Pui Mun -

Miss Smiley.. a playfull gal with quite a potential brilliant mind and a personality that might even be good enough to be on TV! Though may need to find the proper motivation to keep focused.. kinda like me - I only do the things I like to do..

[Reminder : Analysist may not be accurate :P ]

I'm really confident that these guys (including the ones who couldn't make it) would pass JLPT Level 4 with flying colours.. given one more year, they'd might even have a chance at passing JPLT Level 3!
So, I'll be buying more of these booklets from now on and to keep them motivated, I repeat again the promise I made to them here in this blog..
Next year you guys take JLPT Level 4 (atleast), I'll go for Level 1.. Kita ambil periksa sama-sama! :)

Batman no more..

The link is at the end of the entry.. try it out la.. its quite cool.. ;)

What if...

I believe in 'alternate dimensions'.. It's an interesting topic to discuss.. But today's entry however leans more on the lighter side of it..

My belief of the 'alternate dimension' is based on the choices we face daily.. They way I see it, our life is mapped out by God somewhat like the blood vessels in our body. We face certain pre-fixed points that we can't avoid (Qadar) but how we get there varies by which route (Qada') we choose to take.. I'm sure we all have atleast once wondered what might have happen if we were to do something another way.. Like what if I continued studying..? What if I didn't met that guy..? etc.. And every now and then we get to see a glimpse of what might have been..

So, today I'd like to share with you guys one of those "What if"..
The below picture is my interpretation of "What if Kal-El landed somewhere in India"

HAHAHAHA.. Sorry but the picture cracks me up everytime!!

Something came up.. crap!! :P

I was thinking about writing something else, but this thing came up and I just had to address is first.

I'm someone who takes pride in what I do.. no matter if its related to my daily job or even something I do as a hobby.. I like to tell my family and friends of my 'achievements'.. So, when my book came out I was really REALLY happy about it.. It one of my first and biggest accomplishment.. I gave out free copies around just to share that sense of happiness + a pinch of pride..

But today, I'm somewhat frustrated by it.. actually I'm frustrated at the quality of the job that the publishing company did.. well, let me just list down my frustration..

1. I met them in March, they wanted to launch the book before the World Cup (June).. They said the publication process takes about 2 weeks, so I had to rush finish writing it.

2. Midway, they had this 'idea' to bring in a big name from the local soccer scene to help with promotions..

3. Upon completion of writing (around 2nd week of May), they said they wanted to postpone the launch AFTER the World Cup Finals (July)..

4. They also wanted the soccer celebrity to be the co-author of the book with partial share of the writer's royalty..

5. Title of the book was changed from my "Antara Pen & Bola" to "Cemerlang & Menang Cara Bola Sepak" - the chief got the inspiration after taking a bath :P

6. Book cover came out, my name was on the 2nd line and almost half the size of the other guy.. they also opt to not use the picture of us shaking hands..

7. One month after the book was launched, the managing editor who was responsible for pulling me in, resigned from the company.. We had a few other 'title/projects' in the works at that time..

8. All promotion plans was scrapped.. no reasons given or should I say know one actually knew what was the plan..

9. Three months after launch, I saw the book finally made it to MPH Alamanda.. it was already on the 30% discount list..

9. Few weeks later, I got a call saying that they had misplaced the original agreement which was signed sometime in June..

10. Following this, they asked me to fill in the writer's details form again..

And today, I found out that the editing job done on the book did more harm than good.. Hmmm.. I'm not someone who likes to criticize things that I don't have sufficient knowledge of but it really boils my blood to see 'professionals producing amature level work quality'. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful to them for giving me the chance.. but.. for a company that produces hundreds of titles a year (and not to mention some of them are the nation's bestseller) to waste such an opportunity to come out with an brand new 'out of the box product' like this is.. is well.. there's just no excuse.. time? they had plenty.. experience? they've been at it for years.. passion? they motivated me to do my part.. attitude? well, didn't see anyone frowning during the launching ceremony..

My point here is.. If this is an example of how a 'local champ' do their job, I'm worried how they would really fare in an opened global market.. Are we, MALAYsians truely ready...? With the 50th Merdeka celebration coming next year.. you guys tell me laa..

P/S: The 'soccer celebrity' was really a nice guy.. I really respect him..

Tie up no. 1.. a comeback poem!

Before I was a blogger, I was 'incidently' a writer.. but waaay before that, I was an 'inspiring' poet.. Nothing big or fancy though, just as a way to express my personal feelings and thoughts.. I love being able to 'say something' in an artistic way.. ;)

My first poem was in Malay and written back in 1995.. Things got abit slow after I started working.. actually I haven't written anything since 2004 - an interpretation of that popular Meteor Garden theme "Qing Fei De Yi" (if you want, I could post it later).. But last Friday, somehow my creative juices started flowing again.. perhaps it was because of the emotional rollercoaster I've been going through lately.. and within just a few minutes, I got my latest poem - a first Malay poem since January 2003!

So, here is the premiere of "Suatu Hari Kau Akan Tahu"

Suatu Hari Kau Akan Tahu..

Bila hujan membasahi bumi..
mungkin kau akan mengerti..
Betapa gersangnya jiwa ini..
menanti untuk diisi..
memenuhi hasrat naluri..

Bila panas menyinari petang..
mungkin jelas terbayang..
Betapa hatiku melayang..
saat dirimu ku kenang..
entah bilakan tenang..

Bila salju membeku..
mungkin di situ kan kau temu..
Betapa dingin nista itu..
yang bukan diundang berlaku..
Suatu hari kau akan tahu..
Suatu hari kau akan tahu..
Betapa dalamnya cintaku
yang khas buatmu..

Balada Pemuzik Jalanan

Jeritan akordian tua
Merayap di udara
Meniti di hati manusia
Yang berjalan di kaki lima
Berkaca mata hitam
Berdendang lagu ehsan
Dari kalbu sang insan
Si pemuzik jalanan
Dengan seribu impian
Berpandukan naluri
Setajam mentari
Walau dunia gelap gelita
Namun terang cahaya hatinya

Song by Zainol Ali
Lyrics by S.Amin Shahab
Performed by SEARCH

This song had been going through my mind the whole night..
Yesterday's practise session somewhat gave me a glimpse of the life of a musician.. :P

I've always wanted to be a Rock & Roll star.. and if you've been following my blog, you'd probably know about
my annual dinner gig on 8th December.. I know it's not really a BIG thing but for me it is..
this will be my 1st performance with a live band in 6 years!
And I've never did something more than 3 songs straight.. of coz I did
occasionally sang alone at the karaoke parlour for 3 hours when I was in Japan (perhaps I'll talk about this 'obsession' in another entry)..
but that's different laa..

The band started with Jai, Zainy and yours truly.. then we roped in a taiko by the name of James.. James is truly THE MAN! Not to say anything less about Jai and Zainy.. Jai is wicked on the six strings and provides a steady drumbeat.. and Zainy is the master of 4 strings.. But James ROCKS.. I knew from word of mouth that he plays the guitars but I was slapped silly when I saw him on keyboards and again on drums.. this dude never seize to suprise me.. :)
Ever since the committee agreed to allow us play, we're been jamming..
We also pulled in Ujang and Zafi.. Now Ujang, an otai in SEM (he's up for the 10 years service award) plays guitars and Zafi were to take on the drums - you must be thinking.. 3 drummers? well, its a long story.. hehe..
I also managed to convince the HR people to allow us to practise in one of the empty rooms located at the 5th floor - office restricted area tuu.. :P

Like all musicians, we faced obsticles.. and had to make a number of sacrifices.. I'm sure the others have their stoires, but I'll just share some of mine here..
Talk of RMs aside (had bought a new amp & sent my guitar for repair), I think the biggest sacrifice I had to make was my family time.. I think that's why most musicians really need a supporting spouse and a family that understands the demands of having that career.. My eyes are more opened now.. I totally respect serious musicians that work hard to make a living out of their passion.. ANDA HEBAT!!

== break ==

News flash!
Band members just called in a meeting.. looks like we'll be scraping "Pupus" from the set list.. I'm quite devastated by this.. It was the one ballad I REALLY wanted to do as I'm usually known to be the 'fast-number-guy'.. and a song like "Pupus" would give me room to show my true ability - to melt people's heart out.. huhuhu :(
I guess this is another one of those things a band goes trough - CREATIVE DIFFERENCES.. crap!! :P <-- emotional me talking..

Well, all in all the dino-rockers Rolling Stones said it best.. You can't always get what you want..
Hmmm.. How I wish I had taken guitar lessons seriously.. :P

"In absentia luci, tenebrae vinciunt"

The above is latin for "In absence of light, darkness prevails"..
Hmmm.. feels like another 'serious' entry coming.. hehe..

Firstly, I'm a Muslim.. how much of a (good) Muslim am I? God knows..
I believe in God and I have faith that God gives us 'clues' or 'signs' if we look hard enough..
For example.. I never told anyone about this before, so hush, OK? :)
On Friday 19th 1999, I was lying on the sofa flicking through the channels (back then we didn't have ASTRO).. my father who had been suffering from leukaemia was sleeping on a mattress next to the sofa.. as I skipped through the channels, I came across the TV3 program 'Al-Kulliyah'.. I couldn't remember the topic, but it was something about death..
On of the panel ustaz gave an advice to not just say "mengucap" to the dying person, but to guide him/her by actually reciting the shahadah into the person's right ear..
I had no idea that THAT few seconds watching TV would be the most important lesson I would ever learn.. because on Saturday 20th 1999, in my father's last few moments, as everyone was saying to him "mengucap.. mengucap!!", I was the one who had to do what the ustaz said the day before.. but to the left ear, since I knew my father's right ear was blocked (he complaint to me a few days before not to speak to his right ear)..

[Al-Fatihah to my father, Othman Haji Saaid]

Now.. alot of people out there actually have no faith in God.. they say God (at times refering to Him as 'A Powerful Source') does exist, they doubt Him in their hearts by giving excuses such as "If God is Almighty and good, why is there so much evil and distruction happening in this world?"..
There's quite a number of good arguements from Islam's point of view.. but a non-believer usually wouldn't believe something coming from a source that is not of his beliefs.. kan?
So one of my favourite arguements or explaination would be the above.. "In absence of light, darkness prevails".. Evil exists due to the absence of goodness.. some might argue this by saying that God is absent in certain places..? No.. He's not absent, He's always there.. provided that you look for Him.. Now I'd like to ask those people (who has doubts), did you look for Him? Did you even try too?? Could it be that you did something to make Him mad and turn away from you?

My house had a blackout 2 nights ago.. it was total darkness.. but I knew where to find the candles.. Al-hamdulillah.. I knew where the source for light was..
But sometimes just knowing is not good enough, you need to be prepared too.. you need to work on it.. and the truth is I also need to work on it.. God helps those who tries and put an effort to make changes in their own lives.. those will come out victoriuos, InsyaAllah..

FYI, I used about 3 sticks of candle during that blackout.. now I need to stock up again.. Please remind me to get some candles on my way back home.. ;)

Don't Believe the TRUTH..

Above title is taken from the last OASIS studio album.. OASIS is a great band, but today's entry is not about that.. sorry ye..

Something has been bothering me for the past few days.. I really need to address it but somehow I don't know how and who to share it with.. it's quite personal and the content may offend those few people that I really care about.

Anyway.. in the quest to 'fix myself', I've been reading some articles on the internet about relationships, self-esteem and such.. I think I may have a problem here.. I may be suffering from lack of self-confidence.. Imagine me, the self proclaimed 'sensei' or youth mentor cum motivator (konon.. hehe) admitting to having such problem.. :)
Well, it's true when they say that the truth hurts.. and most of the time people tend to avoid from getting hurt.. ye la, siapa yang suka-suka nak potong jari dengan pisau or put one's hand in boiling water just to feel if it's hot enough.. kan?

Sometimes people are so afraid of the pain (which at times might merely be just a perception) that they shut it down completely..
For example.. Let's look at the local politicians.. if a guy from Party A were to say something that is the truth or would bring good, then people from Party B would argue the point just because the idea came from someone from the other party eventhough it's the truth.. then they'll twist it around and come out with something new or a reprise version..
Worse if the 'objections' came off people from the same party?? Now that's a "What the h...?!" situation -- another entry perhaps.. hihi..

But looking on a smaller scale.. how many would admit to a mistake made during work? Sometimes a simple solution is available provided that the truth is told.. but we had to hide it until it blows up in our own face.. Familiar ke? ;)
[Reminder: A stitch in time saves nine]

So, how many of us really believe in the TRUTH? When I say believe, I mean truly BELIEVE.. believe that it's for the better and as much as it may hurt, you're confident that you'll still survive it..
If you said YES, then would you go back today and tell your friend, partner, spouse, etc. what they are lacking (in order for them to improve)? Or would you just select certain situations where you think the truth could be accepted and lie on others?
[Reminder: What doesn't kill you would only make you stronger]

The question here is more likely are YOU brave enough? Not just to listen to, but also to speak of the truth..
Two simple example..
If you're a smoker, would you say smoking is a bad habit and quit?
If you're a Muslim lady not wearing a tudung, would you say it's a sin and start wearing one?

Honestly, how much have we been avoiding the truth all this time that we end up living in a life full of deceptions and false expectations?
Come.. let's share our thoughts on this.. Group therapy time! hehe :)

Danger on wheels

In coherence with my previous entry, here's an example of 'brainless' things people do without even realizing the danger it could cause.. I saw it on my way to class last Saturday..

Nasib baik aku mengelak.. :P

Homer-sapiens

Ever wondered why people act or say stupid things sometimes?
Well, it's simple.. many of us don't take care of our brains properly.. and most of the time, they don't even realize it..

For example.. If you were to move and use a different route to work.. at first you may find it refreshing and fun.. but as the days go by and it turns into your daily routine, you might even be able to drive without even having to think.. and that's dangerous!!

My theory is simpe - Our brain is a muscle.. if you exercise a muscle and give it proper nutrients, it'll grow strong and healthy.. not using it on a regular basis however will result in 'deterioration' and soon enough it would totally shut down on you.. that's why I give my brain a healthy dose of 'exercise' daily.. :) I try to take different routes to work and I keep myself occupied when I don't have anything to do by working on my ideas.. one of them is the story I'm working on at the moment..

Ohh.. and I must also remind you guys.. like any other muscle toning, DON'T over do it.. if you're not used to exercising your brain, start off slow and pick up pace gradually.. we don't want any brain 'cramps' now do we? hehe..

In the works..

Many of you must be wondering why I've been quiet lately..
Well, apart for focusing on band practise, I've found my 'lost script' and have been 'working' on it ever since.. :)

The story is still being develope as I go along but I've decided to post it scene by scene in a new blog.. I welcome any comments and suggestions on the characters and storyline.. I got some major plans for it once it's finished but in the meantime you guys could drop by my other blog and I hope you'll enjoy the story "Kejora di Sahara".. stay tune for updates ya! ;)

Once in a blue moon..

Every now and then, there'll be a song that would blow people's minds and turn into a classic.. here's one punk rock song that I figure might just turn out to be the next Bohemian Rhapsody

--
Welcome To The Black Parade
by My Chemical Romance

When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band.

He said, "Son when you grow up,
would you be the saviour of the broken, the beaten, and the damned?"
He said "Will you defeat them,
your demons, and all the non believers, the plans that they have made?"
Because one day I'll leave you,
A phantom to lead you in the summer,
To join the black parade."

Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me.
And other times I feel like I should go.
When through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets.
And when you're gone we want you all to know.

We'll carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And in my heart I can't contain it
The anthem won't explain it.

A world that sends you reeling from decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all.
So paint it black and take it back
Lets shout it loud and clear
Defiant to the end
We hear the call

To carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches

On and on we carry through the fears
Ooh oh ohhhh

Disappointed faces of your peers
Ooh oh ohhhh

Take a look at me, cause I could not care at all

Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world, will never take my heart
You can try, you'll never break me
Want it all, we wanna play this part
Won't explain, or say I'm sorry
I'm not ashamed, I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer, for all the broken
Listen here, because it's only
I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
I'm just a boy, who's meant to sing this song
I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
I -- don't -- care

We'll carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
You'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches on
(Do or die, you'll never make me)
(Because the world, will never take my heart)
(You can try, you'll never break me)
(Want it all)
We'll carry on
(We wanna play this part)
(Do or die)
We'll carry on
(You'll never make me)
(Because the world)
We'll carry on
(Will never take my heart)
(You can try)
We'll carry
(You'll never break me)
(Want it all)
We'll carry on

Venue Review

Yesterday after work, our Annual Dinner Committee went to Sunway Resort Hotel to check out the ballroom that was to be our venue for this year's dinner.
I was extra excited to see the place as I wanted to get the feel of it in order to get a rough idea on how to perform with the band on that night.

The place was pretty impressive (great for taking 'interesting' snapshots) but first impression was.. this place reminded me of Aerosmith's Jaded video!
A pinch of medievil taste with plenty of dark earthy colours.. Great! So now I have a benchmark to work on.. :)

These are a few pics I took.. didn't turn on the flash as I wanted to capture the 'natural' tone of place..

The stage will be here.. see how much it resembles the stage in Jaded..

And see how the ceiling kinda gives the midievil look..

lebih kurang sama dengan this one.. kan?

Here's what the view from the stage would probably look like.. :)
